An event titled "Addiction and Combating Addiction," aimed at first-year students of our faculty, was held at Gökmedrese. The event began with an opening speech by our Dean, Prof. Dr. Raşit Kılıç.
Following the opening, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Özsoy, a faculty member from the Department of Mental Health and Diseases, provided students with information regarding the definition of addiction, types of addiction, the impact of addiction on the individual, family, and society, as well as protective and preventive approaches to combating addiction.
It was noted that, in addition to tobacco, alcohol, and substance addictions, behavioral addictions—such as internet, online gaming, smartphone, virtual betting, and gambling addictions—now constitute significant public health issues. Attention was drawn to the fact that addiction can lead not only to individual health problems but also to issues within family and social relationships, job losses, and various societal problems.
Emphasizing that addiction is a preventable and treatable disease, the event highlighted the importance of taking early preventive measures. In this context, it was stated that effective communication, sports, art, and social activities contribute to individuals developing healthy lifestyle habits.
The event also underscored the importance of supporting—rather than judging or ostracizing—individuals struggling with addiction, noting that raising public awareness plays a crucial role in the fight against addiction.
A group photo was taken following the Q&A session, where students' questions were answered. The program concluded after the group photo.
